The Longest Gap
´The Longest Gap´ is a durational performance combining a dialogic practice with the sculpting of an enduring live action. It traverses the Museum’s spaces, dilating the transient presence of the bodies that come across elusive encounters with the public. With the theme of liminality, distancing and home as a thread-line, the work investigates the relationship between visitor's gaze and performing bodies in the museum context.
Created within the frame of ARoS Atelier, where Mirko Guido was invited as artist in residence, the 3 hours durational performance was created in relation with the particular architecture of the ARoS Museum, and by observing the way public moved in and out of the Museum, in and out the gallery spaces. It focused on the corridors, staircases and halls, as an intermediate space, a place of passage, of before and after, where the uncertainty of ´what these bodies are doing´ can increase, reinforcing the potential for doubt, avoidance or curiosity.
The performers initiate an almost intimate dialogue with the passing public, exploring the relationship between near and far. They tell stories and lush descriptions of distant planets, and in return ask questions about the personal feeling of home. How far can we stretch into space and, when we return, where do we look, what do we sense and remember? In an accumulation of one-to-one dialogues that intertwine with the action of the performers, every minute, hour and day, the walls, balconies and floor of the museum become part of an imaginary landscape that is constantly growing and flourishing.
